The horse and the rider of this event must work together. Both women and boys (age 16 and under) may compete. Horned cattle are not allowed in this event. This would include any cattle that has horns longer than two inches on its head.
The rider must have the end of their rope tied to the saddle horn and a brightly colored flag at the end. The calf then gets a head start before the horse and rider is allowed to begin. If the barrier is broken at the start line, the rider receives a 10-second penalty.
When the loop of the rope passes over the head of the calf, the rider pulls in the slack and stops the horse in its tracks! The rope then breaks away from the saddle horn to avoid injury to the calf. When the breakaway rope falls to the ground the official time is stopped and the rider with the shortest time wins.
